COASTAL SKIPPER MODULE


During this 6 week course you will build on your skills and experience different sailing locations with sailing both in the Mediterranean and Solent. Start with a refresher week and then increase your knowledge and acquire additional qualifications before taking your RYA Coastal Skipper exam.   
Course Prerequisites:
You should have the knowledge and experience to RYA Day Skipper practical and theory level or equivalent.

Skipper Refresher

This 5 day hands-on practical course will act as an opportunity to sharpen up skills and remind you of those less frequently used.

RYA Sea Survival

Sat (1 day)

An essential qualification required when sailing further than 60 miles offshore. During this one day lesson you will learn personal survival techniques and the proper use of rescue equipment.

RYA First Aid

Sun (1 day)

A one-day course combining both practical and theory designed to form part of the mandatory minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training for all Skippers.

RYA Coastal Skipper Theory

Mon - Fri (5 days)

This course covers advanced navigation, including chart work, position fixing, tides, buoyage and offshore passage planning as well as the essential subjects of safety, International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea and meteorology. The use of GPS is also included.

RYA VHF Radio

Sat (1 day)

This course covers the use of a VHF Radio equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

Gibraltar Experience

'Cruise the Algarve'

Sun - Sun (14 days)

During this purpose designed cruise you will familiarise yourself with long distance sailing and navigation along the South coast of Spain and weather dependant, into Seville. During your cruise you will become familiar with custom formalities and mooring procedures typical to the Mediterranean. Upon entering Seville you will experience unusually, lock handling. Anticipated ports will include Barbate, Chipiona, Cadiz, Rota and Sancti Petri. After arriving in Seville you will enjoy a day off to explore this beautiful city before making preparations for your return cruise back to Gibraltar.

Race Training including an Offshore Race

Wed - Sun (5 days)

In preparation for entry into an Offshore Race from the Solent you will be practising sail changes, spinnaker hoists, gybes, drops and peels, race navigation rules and start line tactics. During the training your sailing techniques will become faster and more driven.

Coastal Skipper preparation

Mon - Fri (5 days)

The Coastal Skipper course is intended to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

This will include passage planning, preparing a pilotage plan, showing you can take charge of a yacht and direct the crew and that you can control the yacht effectively in a confined space under sail and power.

RYA Coastal Skipper Exam

Sat - Sun (2 days)

N/A

2 day assessment with an Examiner onboard who will observe your navigational and seamanship skills and test your knowledge.
